About the scholarship

The Sultan Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram Scholarship provides financial support to deserving students in Sulu and surrounding communities. Each year, we award multiple scholarships of ₱6,500 to help cover the real costs of staying in school, including tuition, books, supplies, and transportation.

Scholarship funds will support students directly and provide funding to schools, helping groups of children benefit from shared educational resources and opportunities.

These scholarships invest in local talent, strengthen communities, and honor the rich history and enduring potential of the people of Sulu.

The initiative behind the scholarship

The Sulu Circle

The Sulu Circle is an American-led initiative supporting educational opportunity in Sulu and the Southern Philippines.

Working in partnership with local communities, we connect individual donors with students for whom modest financial assistance can make a meaningful difference in continuing their education.

Our first initiative is the Sultan Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram Scholarship, which provides direct educational support to deserving students in Sulu and surrounding communities.

The Circle is intentionally simple. We raise support, work with people in Sulu to identify students and local needs, and account for how the funds are used. Our purpose is not to direct the community from afar, but to support opportunities identified by the people who live there.

Guided by the Sultan

The scholarship is established in honor of His Majesty Sultan Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram. The Sultan is consulted throughout the process and helps ensure the awards reach the students who need them most. Our role is to support their education and make sure every peso is accounted for. The community’s role is to help us direct it wisely.
